READING CORPORATE EVENTS

Let Freedom arrange your Reading team-building days. We have a lot to offer to ensure that your corporate weekend goes smoothly whilst achieving all your aims and objectives.

But where exactly is Reading, we hear you inquire. Well we would ask you to read on and find out why it’s the perfect place to host your Reading company fun days. There is great shopping, cool bars and sophisticated dining, but also more than enough for you and the team to engage in some fun, morale boosting activities. Yes, Reading ticks all the boxes on a training and development wish list.

So where is it? Reading is the county town of Royal Berkshire, situated in beautiful countryside in the heart of the Thames Valley with the rivers Kennet and Thames flowing through its centre and where half of the region has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Reading is one of the most economically successful and dynamic areas of the South East – so where better to hold your Reading team building days.

Situated halfway between London and Oxford (about an hours drive) making it a great location for your Reading corporate days and as a vibrant university town, with modern facilities and with an interesting history there is something here for everyone. Although situated close to London it’s certainly not got London prices – that’s always good news!!!

The social scene is bustling, buzzing and buoyant (thanks to the development of the bar scene and copious visitors). There is a real cosmopolitan feel to the lively streets 24 hours a day.

So let’s just introduce you to a little of the history of the town. Reading twinned with Dusseldorf dates back to Anglo Saxon era and was traditionally known as The Place of Readda’s People. It has evolved through Viking times and Victorian splendour each leaving their own mark on this remarkable town.

Industry has always been at the heart of Reading’s economic success and
in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century 3 companies would put Reading in the spotlight known as the 3 B’s Beer, Biscuits and Bulbs. Simonds Brewery founded in 1785 was the largest and most successful brewery in the area by the mid nineteenth century. In 1806 the family business Suttons Seeds was founded and only relocated to Devon in 1976 and from 1822 Huntley & Palmers put Reading on the business map-making biscuits so successfully that by 1900 it was the largest manufacturer of biscuits in the world employing over 5000 staff.

Over the passage of time however these more traditional companies have been swept aside and Reading is now more associated with the 3 I’s of Insurance, Investments and IT.

3 of the top Best 20 Companies to work for in the UK (Sunday Times Mar 2008) are now based in Reading - KPMG, Ernst & Young and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

With its easy access to London and strategically placed at the heart of the UK transport network Reading has become the destination of choice for international business. With its location at the heart of the Thames Valley Reading has often been cited as “The Engine Room” of the UK.

Reading has a very healthy labour market with low unemployment and high economic activity which is probably why it is now home to the European Headquarters of 10 of the top 50 global organisations. Some of the world’s most famously recognised names – Cisco, Prudential and Yell to name a few, and 13 industry leaders, in the world’s top $30 billion brands are now based in Reading.

Reading has always been very well connected for travel and in the literary sense. Jane Austen attended the Abbey school for 2 years, Michael Bond creator of Paddington Bear and Kenneth Grahame for Wind in the Willows fame both lived here but infamously Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in the jail for two years from where he wrote the epic poem “The Ballad of Reading Gaol”.

Reading’s most famous son, however, must be Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais. Let us know if you bump into him (check to see if he’s “having a laugh”).

But, hey!!! Who hasn’t heard of the “Reading Festival” - now in its twentieth year?? Previous headliners have included the Wonderstuff, Nirvana, Fishbone and Ben Folds Five. Now the event sells out within 24 hours and sees many more bands such as the Fratellis, the Killers and Metallica clamouring for the headline spot. It’s sooooo good that Shockwaves/NME voted Reading Festival as the Best Live Event of 2008 – how cool is that!!!

From a simple drink down by the river, indulging in some retail therapy, watching or participating in some sporting activities and of course partying Reading has it all.
